G.H. Bass & Co. is a shoe company that was founded in 1876 by George Henry Bass. He started the company in Wilton, Maine, and it eventually moved to Lewiston, Maine. The company is best known for its boat shoes, which were first introduced in 1936.

Bass was born in1850 in Orland, Maine, and he began making shoes at the age of 16. In 1876, he moved to Wilton and started G.H. Bass & Co. The company initially made slippers and other footwear for men and women. In 1901, the company moved to Lewiston, where it remains today.

The company began to expand in the early 1900s, opening stores in New York City and Boston. It also started selling shoes through catalogues and mail orders. In 1909, Bass travelled to Europe, where he was inspired by the hand-crafted shoes he saw there. He came back to the United States and started making higher-quality shoes using European methods and materials.

The company continued to grow throughout the early twentieth century. In 1911, it opened a factory in Brockton, Massachusetts, which produced most of the company’s shoes until it closed in 2001. In 1926, Bass visited Argentina and was impressed by the quality of their leather; as a result, G.H. Bass & Co became one of the first companies to import Argentinian leather into the United States.
