The company went public in 1952 and began expanding rapidly throughout the Southeast. By 1960, there were 500 stores in 10 states. In 1971, Winn-Dixie was acquired by the food conglomerate ITT for $378 million. ITT sold off the non-grocery portions of Winn-Dixie in 1976 and the grocery business was renamed Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc.
In 1982, Winn-Dixie filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to competition from larger grocery chains such as Kroger and Safeway as well as discount retailers such as Wal-Mart. The company emerged from bankruptcy in 1983 and began to slowly rebuild its operations.
